Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money but too many affiliates go about it the wrong way. They think that all they have to do is sent out their affiliate link on some social media platform and the money will start rolling in.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. This is something you must understand.
There must be some effort on your part if you want to succeed. And that is why you are reading this article. You want to succeed in affiliate marketing.
And if you want to succeed in affiliate marketing you need to avoid some killer mistakes. While there a plenty of affiliate marketing mistakes you can make, one particular mistake will cause you to fail more than all the rest.
Only Focusing On Selling
This may seem silly because if you are in affiliate marketing you are, by definition, selling something. But notice I said, “only focusing on selling.”
There is an old saying that goes, “People love to buy but hate to be sold.” You do not want to come off as a Used Car Salesman who is only interested in taking money from your prospect. Most people can sniff that out in an instant. Don’t be that person.
It is very tempting to go after the sale over everything else. After all, you have bills to pay, too. But this is the wrong way to go about it. If you focus only on making the sale no matter what you are setting yourself up to fail.
One thing you must remember is that your customers do not care about you, they care about themselves.
They care about solving their problems and finding answers to their questions. This is where you come in.
When you see most people selling affiliate marketing courses on the Internet, they will almost always be posing in front of some expensive sports car or they are giving you a tour of their mansion. It’s all about the money.
I’m not here to tell you money doesn’t matter. It does. But it should not be the only reason you get into this business. There are enough scammers and charlatans in this industry, and we do not need another one. The more affiliate marketing mistakes you make, the harder it will be for you to make any money.
You will have a longer and more successful career if you focus on solving people’s problems. This is how I, and many others, have built successful careers.
No matter what product or service you are selling, it has to solve your customer’s problems. That is why they are coming to you in the first place.
How do you solve their problems? Well, first you need to know what their problem is. There are a few ways to do this.
First, you should be doing extensive keyword research. Find out what search term your prospects are looking for. I use a tool called Ubersuggest for all my keyword research. When you know what your prospects are looking for then you can tailor your message to them.
Second, see what people are saying on social media. Most social media platforms have a search feature, and you can type in a few phrases and see what questions people have regarding your product or service.
Once you know what your prospects are having trouble with, their problem, you can easily set out to providing a solution to those particular problems. This goes a long way towards building trust between you and them. Remember this, people would rather buy from someone they trust.
Building Trust In The Sales Process
Building trust between yourself and your prospect is the most important step in the sales process. And it is very easy to lose. Once your prospect feels that you do not have their best interest in mind they will pull away and go looking elsewhere.
So how do you build trust?
The easiest way to build trust is by caring. Care about your prospect and the problems they are having. Once you show that you care and are making a true effort to solve their problems your prospects will be more open to buying from you.
Create content that answers their questions and provides an actionable solution to their problems. If you can do this on a consistent basis you will more successful than you can imagine.
However, if you are only looking to make a sale you will be making it harder on yourself. You don’t want to do that. You can make some affiliate marketing mistakes and still be successful but if you can’t build trust, you will most likely fail.
Create Valuable Content
I am a big believer in content marketing. I buy very little paid advertisements. I know that this goes against a lot of what other people teach. But this strategy has worked well for me and has saved me a lot of money over the years.
I focus mostly on video and blog posts. These are my strengths. Yours may be different. In truth it doesn’t really matter what type of content you create. Some people are better at creating audio content or infographics. The point is to find your strength and stick to it.
If you are a wiz at Instagram marketing, then focus on that. There are so many platforms out there where you can present your message today that we have an embarrassment of riches.
The only thing you MUST do is provide valuable content. This is one of the few absolutes when it comes to affiliate marketing.
When it comes to affiliate marketing mistakes to avoid, focusing solely on selling is public enemy number one.
